How to choose the right Cornwall print size for your space

A photograph can feel completely different at A4 and A0. The right choice is less about buying the largest print available and more about matching the image, wall and viewing distance. This guide explains how Cornwall Prints’ A-series sizes work and how to choose a format that feels intentional in your room.

Start with the wall, not the print

Measure the usable area rather than the whole wall. Furniture, shelves, switches and nearby pictures all affect how much visual space is actually available. As a simple check, mark the proposed print size with low-tack masking tape or sheets of paper, then step back to the place from which you will usually see it.

If the artwork will sit above a sofa, bed or sideboard, leave enough breathing room around it. A print that looks large in your hands can appear surprisingly modest once it is surrounded by furniture and empty wall.

What the A sizes feel like

  • A4 — 210 × 297 mm: a compact choice for shelves, desks, bedside spaces, small gifts and grouped gallery walls.
  • A3 — 297 × 420 mm: large enough to read clearly on its own while remaining easy to place in a hallway, bedroom or smaller living space.
  • A2 — 420 × 594 mm: a versatile statement size for most domestic rooms, with enough scale for aerial coastline detail to become part of the experience.
  • A1 — 594 × 841 mm: strong wall presence for living rooms, dining spaces, offices and holiday lets.
  • A0 — 841 × 1189 mm: the largest option, suited to broad walls and rooms where the print can be viewed from a useful distance.

All five share the same A-series proportions. Moving up a size increases impact without changing the underlying shape of the composition.

Consider the image itself

Wide coastal scenes, estuary channels and photographs with fine beach detail often reward a larger format because there is more room for the eye to travel through the picture. Simpler top-down compositions can work beautifully at either end of the scale: compact as part of a group, or large as contemporary coastal wall art.

Viewing distance matters too. A4 and A3 invite a closer look. A2, A1 and A0 can hold a room from farther away while still revealing details as you approach.

Unframed, framed or canvas?

An unframed photographic print gives you the freedom to choose your own frame or mount. Framed Cornwall Prints are available from A4 to A0 in a 22 mm black stained wood frame with a 35 mm off-white mount. A4 and A3 use glass; A2, A1 and A0 use lighter, shatterproof acrylic.

Canvas has a different character: the photograph is printed onto 350gsm bright white textured poly-cotton canvas and hand-stretched onto a 22 mm-deep wooden frame. Mirrored edges keep the whole photograph on the front, creating a finished piece that can go straight onto the wall.

Borderless or a white border?

For unframed prints, borderless printing uses the full selected A-size for the image. The white-border option adds a clean 15 mm border on all sides within the final paper size, so the photographed area becomes slightly smaller. A border can give the image a naturally mounted appearance, while borderless printing maximises colour and detail.
