Charlestown

Charlestown is a historic harbour village on Cornwall’s south coast, set on the edge of St Austell Bay. Stone piers shelter its compact inner basin, while Georgian buildings, waterfront cottages and small beaches sit between the sea and the rising land towards St Austell.

The purpose-built mineral port was developed by Charles Rashleigh between 1792 and 1801 to serve the copper and china-clay trades. Its surviving harbour works are part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site, and the village remains closely associated with traditional sailing vessels and maritime film locations.
