Harlyn Bay

Harlyn Bay is known today as a generous, family-friendly beach with surf, sand, rock pools and easy access — but the ground behind the beach holds one of North Cornwall’s most remarkable archaeological stories.

In 1900, building work uncovered a cist grave containing human remains. Further excavation revealed a major Iron Age cemetery, with around 100 graves found in the first season and more discovered over the following years. It is a reminder that these popular holiday beaches have been part of human life for far longer than their modern seaside image suggests.

From the air, Harlyn’s appeal is immediate: a broad crescent of sand, clear water, rocky edges and the route towards Mother Ivey’s Bay and Trevose Head. These prints suit coastal homes, family spaces, holiday lets and anyone who knows this bay well.

Where these Harlyn Bay photographs are taken from

Harlyn is a broad, sheltered crescent, and these views work along it: from the eastern, Trevone side looking west across the bay; from the Mother Ivey's side looking out to sea; and from directly above the water just off the beach, where a small ferry crosses the frame. One image steps back to Stepper Point, with the daymark in the foreground and Harlyn and Trevose Head along the coast behind it.

Tide and light

At low tide the east end of the beach and the rock pools are fully revealed and the bay feels much bigger. The June 2026 photographs were taken at high tide on a day when the water was unusually flat, clear and turquoise, and they are the most colourful Harlyn views I have. The January sunrise sends visible rays across the shoreline into a subdued winter sea.

Choosing a Harlyn print

The high-tide summer views are the best known and suit rooms that can take strong colour. The low-tide and sunrise views are quieter and read well framed. Printed to order, unframed, framed or on canvas.
