Tintagel Castle

Tintagel Castle occupies one of North Cornwall’s most dramatic headlands, with archaeological remains spread across both the mainland cliffs and the island above the Atlantic. The site was an important stronghold and trading centre during the 5th to 7th centuries, before Richard, Earl of Cornwall, built his medieval castle here in the 13th century.

Its later association with the legends of King Arthur made Tintagel internationally famous. A modern footbridge opened in 2019, reconnecting the mainland and island along the line of the lost natural land bridge. From above, the ruins, pathways, gorge, bridge and surrounding sea form a remarkable coastal landscape.
