Daymer Bay

Daymer Bay has a softer, more sheltered feel than many of Cornwall’s open Atlantic beaches. Set inside the Camel Estuary, it is shaped by pale sand, calm water, Brea Hill and the wide tidal space between Rock and Padstow.

Above the bay sits St Enodoc Church, one of North Cornwall’s most atmospheric landmarks. The church was once almost buried by windblown sand, and parts of its architecture can be traced back to the 12th century. Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman loved this area and is buried in the churchyard.

Where these Daymer Bay photographs are taken from

Daymer is photographed from the west over the estuary, looking at the beach with St Enodoc Church behind; from the south end of the beach at mid tide across to Pentire; from the south-east side looking north-west out to the Atlantic and Stepper Point; and from above St Enodoc itself, with the church in the foreground and the estuary, Polzeath and Pentire Point beyond. Butterhole Beach across the water and the Doom Bar at the estuary mouth appear in several views.

Tide and light

Daymer is sheltered, so the water is often flat and the colours in the shallows show clearly. At low tide the sand runs a long way out towards Padstow and the Doom Bar sits in the middle of the frame. At high tide on 30 May 2026 the bay was a calm sheet of light blue against the curve of the shore. The March sunsets bring rain clouds on the Atlantic horizon and warm light down the estuary.
